The DVD
SOUND: Randy Newman's score for Best Picture nominee "Seabiscuit" is presented by Decca in DSD 2.0 and 5.1 on this SACD. A CD layer is also included. The included inserts give no mention of who mixed the soundtrack for 5.1, so I suppose the score mix for the movie may be identical to how it's presented here.
Unlike the 5.1 presentation for James Horner's "Beautiful Mind" score, this is largely a pretty concervative effort. Surrounds do get used for some minor reinforcement of what the front speakers are offering, but rarely did they seem to get conciderable material of their own to present the listener. The result is a mix that's very appropriate, very tasteful, but maybe not quite as exciting or emotional as it could have been.
Although the mix could have involved the surrounds a touch more, a couple of aspects of the overall presentation do shine. The front soundstage more than capably presents both the score's somber, orchestral tracks and more rousing numbers, as the center and front mains combine to offer a detailed, large sound. Sound quality is also first-rate, as piano, strings and other instrumentuals are delivered with grace and a surprising level of realism and clarity. Quiet moments are captured with pin-drop accouracy, while some of the more lively bluegrass-style material is delivered with a full, rich sound that's a pleasure to listen to.
While this may not be demo material for SACD users, this title does do a fine job of delivering Newman's enjoyable mixture of enjoyable (but occasionally a bit sappy and familiar) orchestral work, bluegrass and other genres.
Final Thoughts: While some elements of it sound as if they've appeared in several other films, I found myself enjoying Newman's score more stand-alone than when I first heard it accompanying the movie. The SACD's sound mix is quite straightforward, but sound quality is excellent. Fans of the soundtrack or Newman's prior work should consider a purchase.
