The DVD

SOUND: Aerosmith's breakthrough classic is presented here on SACD in DSD 2.0 and 5.1. I can say, without hesitation, that this is one of the most exciting SACD releases I've heard lately. While not among Aerosmith's hardcore following, I can certainly appreciate what a wonderful, memorable, superbly blues-influenced album this is. What's exciting is how the SACD presentation breathes such life into a more than 25-year-old album.

One needs to look no further than the classic "Walk this Way" to find an example of how terrific this recording sounds. Joey Kramer's drum hits have a rich, defined low-end kick from the main speakers, while that brillant, memorable guitar riff cuts through the listening space with both remarkable clarity and grit. Tyler's vocals are often in the center channel throughout the album, but occasionally are spread out across the front channels.

Engineer Jay Messina was the one faced with the task of remixing this much-beloved album for 5.1, and he's done a terrific job. This is a prime example of feeling surrounded by music, yet not feeling the desire to look to one side or the other when something distinct turns up in one of the surrounds. Appropriate and tasteful, the mix manages to nicely spread out the instrumentals and keep everything superbly balanced.

Once again, aside from the stellar mix, the sound quality is also suprising, which speaks volumes for the quality of the original recording. On SACD, every drum hit sounds strong and defined, while the guitars simply rock with a clarity that one expects from a much more recent recording. Tyler's signature vocals are also presented superbly, sounding natural and clean, especially on "No More No More". The stereo presentation also shared the 5.1 mix's excellent sound quality, but this is an instance where the 5.1 mix provides a marvelous spread of the music that seems to put the listener into the middle of a performance by the band.

Final Thoughts: This is a classic example of SACD done right; this classic album rocks harder and clearer than it probably ever has, with a terrific 5.1 mix and extraordinarily dynamic sound quality, considering its age. Highly recommended.
