The Movie:

One of the WB's (now the CW, where "One Tree Hill" airs on Wednesday nights) latest efforts to strike a chord with audiences, "One Tree Hill" stars Chad Michael Murray (who I'm convinced has never taken a picture where he doesn't look angry) and James Lafferty as Lucas and Nathan Scott, two brothers who both play basketball, but have trouble finding other similarities with one another - aside from the fact that they share a father - Dan Scott (Paul Johansson) - but not the same mother.

The series is a melodrama that focuses on the two brothers, as well as the people important to them in their lives - mothers Karen Roe (Moira Kelly) and Deb Scott (Barbara Alyn Woods) and love interests Haley James (Bethany Joy Lenz), Brooke Davis (Sophia Bush), and Peyton Sawyer (Hilarie Burton).

As with other WB shows like "Everwood", "One Tree Hill" remains a solid drama due to fine performances and, in this case, the ability to walk the line and keep from going over the top and turning too sappy or sentimental. The characters are well-realized and although I'm not a real fan of this kind of genre, I can see why this show has been a hit since it started a couple of years ago.

The DVD

VIDEO: "One Tree Hill" is presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen by Warner Brothers. The episodes here are transfered nicely to disc, with only the occasional issue at times here-and-there. Sharpness and detail are mostly very good, although some low-light scenes and other moments can occasionally look slightly softer than the remainder.

Some minor edge enhancement on occasion and a few traces of pixelation during the darker scenes are the extent of the issues present on this release. Colors remained bright and vivid, with - aside from a moment or two - no smearing.

SOUND: The stereo soundtrack delivers music, dialogue, effects and ambience crisply and clearly.

EXTRAS: Commentary tracks are included for: "With Tired Eyes, Tired Minds, Tired Souls, We Slept" (Mark Schwahn, Joe Davola, Colin Fickes, Sophia Bush, Lee Norris, and Lindsay Wolfington) and "The Show Must Go On" (Mark Schwahn, Joe Davola, Sophia Bush, Lee Norris, and Lindsay Wolfington). Both tracks provide an informative, engaging discussion of working on the episodes (especially the very emotional "With Tired Minds..."), stories from the set, thoughts on how specific scenes turned out and more. In the case of both tracks, everyone participates well, gives their unique perspective on what it takes to make the show and there are few gaps of silence.

Also included are: a short "making of" for "With Tired Eyes, Tired Minds, Tired Souls, We Slept", deleted scenes for many episodes and a gag reel.

Final Thoughts: "One Tree Hill"'s third season set offers a nice helping of supplemental features and very good audio/video quality. Recommended.
